Gabrielle de Montmollin with a story by Ann Ireland

Mixed media works on paper

In 1999 Ann Ireland wrote a one-page story inspired by a photograph from Gabrielle de Montmollin’s series, “Leading Ladies.” She called the story “Sunday Morning.” This exhibition features Ireland’s story, the photograph, and 25 mixed media panels by Montmollin based on a deconstruction of her photograph.

Sunday Morning

The back story. Ann Ireland and Gabrielle de Montmollin knew each other from school in Toronto, first at Deer Park Junior High and then at Jarvis Collegiate. After school, they went separate ways, Gabrielle became a photographer and Ann became a writer. Ann published five novels: A Certain Mr. Takahashi; The Instructor; Exile; The Blue Guitar; and, Where’s Bob?

They lost track of each other, but then around 1996 or thereabouts they met up again by chance as they lived in the same neighborhood. Gabrielle can’t remember exactly how it happened but at some point she asked Ann if she would be interested in writing something about one or more of her photographs. Ann ended up choosing one of the photos from the series “Leading Ladies” and the story she wrote she called “Sunday Morning.”

The photograph was a bit weird and the story Ann wrote was even weirder.

Very sadly Ann Ireland died in 2018 at the age of 65.
