The Niagara Artists Centre presents a series of short media art films curated from the Vtape collection that engage with environmental issues through experimental and poetic approaches. The works by Mike Hoolboom, Shelley Niro, Jeremy Drummond, and Josephine Massarella explore themes of ecological fragility and our relationship to the natural world using moving image, sound, and digital processes to provoke reflection rather than offer simple solutions.
3 Dreams of Horses
Mike Hoolboom, 2018, 6m
Film is made out of gelatin that comes from horses. They’re waiting to be slaughtered, so that pictures can be made.
Many years ago we learned the language of our masters. Though we couldn’t help wondering why so few of you bothered to learn ours.
Three scenes featuring horses, remembering Jacinto. The first is a daytime forest haunting that winds up at a carousel, the second a rainy street in Portugal, the finale a nighttime vigil of fire and water.
Hunger
Shelley Niro, 2008, 6m
A short experimental video illustrating the travails of humans and the exercise of religion in survival. As we progress with technology and education, our hunger changes from what we get from the ground to knowledge we acquire. We now ingest food that is bleached, refined and not very good for the 21st century soul. And we crave it.
Sweet as Honey
Jeremy Drummond, 2001, 3m
A foray into the passing of construction and the formulation of completed "American Dream" style housing.
No End
Josephine Massarella, 2015, 6m
No End was inspired by a poem written by Massarella. During the writing process, abstract images surfaced, subsided, and settled: eventually forming the foundation of a film. The result is a lyrical journey that explores the intersection of interconnectivity and the lived experience.
