Canon Creator Lab | The Nature Walk

In partnership with Niagara Artists Centre, Canon Canada is launching a new initiative designed to support creative exploration and community engagement through the art of photography. Together, they’re bringing hands-on Canon Creator Lab experiences to Niagara, offering guided photo walks and workshops that celebrate both local landscapes and emerging talent.

Using professional Canon gear, participants will have the opportunity to explore their creativity, connect with their community, and learn from experienced local instructors whether starting with the basics or upgrading existing skills.

Twelve Mile Creek
A guiding pathway and a food source for Indigenous peoples, waterpower for the mills of early European settlers, a shipping route for the First and Second Welland Canals, the waters of Twelve Mile Creek have sustained communities for thousands of years.

Twelve Mile Creek’s headwaters are located in the town of Pelham, encompassing some of the most unspoiled and natural areas of Niagara area. Its lower reaches flow through urban areas of Thorold and St. Catharines and has been heavily altered by human activity for almost two centuries. The creek was first known as “Ashquasing” by the Mississaugas Indigenous people, the name meaning “that which lies at the end” in the Anishinaabe language. Walker Botanical Gardens
In 1856 Thomas Rodman Merritt, the son of the famous canal builder William Hamilton Merritt built a stone house on twenty acres of picturesque land on the edge of downtown St. Catharines. In 1863 the house underwent renovations and a major addition was added. It came to be known as Rodman Hall.

To develop the landscape surrounding the manor, Merritt hired an English gardener by the name of Samuel Richardson. Richardson developed a wonderful garden featuring well kept lawns, exotic trees, fountains, borders and a terraced garden on the hillside leading down to the Twelve Mile Creek. He also built a display green house, an extensive kitchen garden and orchard. The Merritts and Richardson were able to see the garden mature into magnificence over a period of five decades.
