About XCAVATE
The first XCAVATE project in 2019 was intended as a one-off, but participant and audience response was so positive that we’ve established XCAVATE as a bi-annual program. Uncommon in its combining of New Generation creative talent and obsolete technologies, this integrated series of workshops and exhibits enables artists to explore expression through moving image and sound without being ensnared by seductive, market-driven technological trends. Participants develop the skills to shoot and develop analog film and create direct animations and collage films. They also delve into the redolence of found film and photographs in NAC’s vast collection of archival 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film and ephemera. The project culminates in a multimedia performance that incorporates all of the participants’ work layered in an environment that audience members meander through.
XCAVATE Residency Includes
A series of workshops over 6 weeks in analog media and handmade filmmaking including cameraless animation, shooting and developing film, eco-processing, and much more!
