Sat 7 June
The Smiley Project
Charles Gervais
Opening Reception
Saturday 7 June at 8pm
Show runs until Friday 20 June
Technocratic civil servant Charles Gervais claims no artistic ability whatsoever. The Smiley Project was born out of countless hours confined to a cubicle while fidgeting with the most basic graphical software available…Microsoft Word Autoshapes function. The result is twelve unremarkable pieces, each one reflecting the “artists” view of a relatively bleak and monotonous existence.
Individually, each piece is nothing more than a modern-day doodle; easily replicated in seconds by anyone with a PC. Together, the twelve pieces form a somewhat striking perspective of our modern world. A world in which an anonymous corporate existence can be captured as a series of anonymous corporate images. A world in which the non-artist, using a virtually non-existant medium, can create a collection of inane visualizations, which together beguile the viewer to ponder the meaning of it all.
