1. NAC Roller Derby Field Trip
Death Track Dolls vs the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (D-VAS)
Bus leaves NAC Saturday 5 July at 3pm, returns after midnight
$45 includes: trip, ticket, dinner!

The Niagara Artists' Centre is strapping on the quads and going to the roller derby!

Saturday 5 July NAC is sponsoring a trip to Toronto for dinner, drinks, and hot women's roller derby action. That night, the Death Track Dolls take on the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (the D-VAS) in a grudge match more than a year in the making.

Forget those hoary memories of Skinny Minnie Miller vaulting opponents over the siderails in the 1970s. That wasn't derby, baby; that was more like professional wrestling. What you get on 5 July is the real deal that's sweeping North America and Europe as the fastest-growing new sport: flat-track action, women of all sizes, shapes and speeds jostling on a tight track, sweating it out for points and nursing real, serious injuries, from torn ACLs to broken jaws.

Your night on the town includes:

* Dinner and pool at Shoxs, a down-to-earth little sports bar on Dundas Street West, in the heart of the Junction. Note: Beverages will cost you extra, as will the charms of local panhandlers.

* Ticket to the bout, at George Bell Arena on Ryding Avenue, off Runnymede between Dundas West and St. Clair West. For the whole summer, this venerable hockey arena has been given over to the Toronto Roller Derby league. (OK, not exactly given... the league's renting it, but Larry at the arena likes the girls.) Choose to sit in the stands, or come down and get up close with a trackside seat! While you're there, buy a T-shirt or a button from one of the six league teams, or grab a cold Amsterdam in the ToRD Tavern. Also, Larry's wife keeps the wienies on full rotation at the snack bar.

* Admission to the official derby afterparty at the Annex Wreckroom, on Bathurst just north of Bloor. Beer is $3 a bottle before midnight, and the tunes are provided by DJ Dwight, who's a stickler for consistency: When you hear "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones, you can pretty much set your watch to the fact that it's 12:25 a.m.

* A devoted NAC bus to and from all the locations. Forget your worries and leave the driving to NAC!

Come on down, experience the thrills of real roller derby action and meet the players. Like most people, you stand a chance of getting hooked... and maybe starting your own team down in Niagara!

Tickets for the whole night are $45 each, and available at NAC.
Call to be on the bus by Friday 4 July.

2. Dialogues With The Forest
Paintings by Diego Chaves
In the Dennis Tourbin Members’ Gallery
Saturday 21 June – Saturday 12 July 2008
Closing Reception
Saturday 12 July 2008 at 3pm

Long ago, man and tree were able to share words like brothers. But as he often does, man lost the ability to hear. Saddened, the trees silenced themselves to the ears of humanity and withheld their secrets. No longer could man know the secrets of eternal life of the Green. No longer could man hear the music of the forest as he passed by. He was unable to hear the symphony of the four elements and the harmony of the birds. His eyes were blind to the meadows turned into dance floors by the swooping birds and falling leaves performed for an audience of flowers. Only the oral tradition allows for man to hold onto the few secrets of the Green he remembers. Secrets that remind humanity that even the simplicity of sights, sounds, and smells found in the woods contain a powerful knowledge.

- Diego Chaves (Edited and complemented by Brock Smeenk)

How can one express the desperation to know the truth?
How can I yell my frustration?
When one stars to talk in other languages
The wind blows out but is only silence
My green is shine but everyone is blind

Desperation is singing because the time’s over
Because my space is shorter
We talk between us but our ideas are not heard
We meet in the dark of the night to plan our strategies
We know the future because we have been here for eternity
How can we be heard, how can we be understood
We are looking for the messenger to give us the news
Someone to open their eyes
We want to yell that we know what the answer is
We know the happiness and beautifulness
We have been here before, before all of you
Before the times, but after the sun

4. HECHO – doodles and such
Dennis Tourbin Members’ Gallery
19 July - 1 August 2008
Reception Saturday 26 July - 8-9 pm

In Spanish, the word hecho is a past participle, meaning ‘done’, ‘finished’ or ‘made’, and is pronounced like ‘eh - cho’. In St. Catharines, Hecho is an urban artist who lurks rooftops and alleyways. He also doodles a lot. On 19 July Hecho invites you to come take a gander at his drawings, all nice and pretty, hanging in frames at the NAC. He hopes all is well, and wishes you a good day. Cheers.
