1. Director's Meandering Preamble
Life, you know, is rather like opening a tin of sardines. We all of us are looking for the key. And I wonder how many of you here tonight have wasted years of your lives looking behind the kitchen dressers of this life for that key. I know I have. Others think they've found the key, don't they? They roll back the lid of the sardine tin of life. They reveal the sardines—the riches of life—therein, and they get them out, and they enjoy them. But, you know, there's always a little bit in the corner you can't get out. I wonder is there a little bit in the corner of your life? I know there is in mine!
- Alan Bennett of Beyond the Fringe, as the Vicar in Take a Pew.
We’re pretty sure that in 2010 we’re going to get our hands on the key for those sardines. Then we’re going to peel the lid back ‘til it snaps right off. The sardines are good--they’re the tasty ones in mustard sauce--and we’re going to pop some whole grain toast to go with them too! Thing is, we’ve got to pace ourselves, digging into this feast. We’ve got some programming, “the riches of life therein,” to share over the months of January and February, but we have some more renovations to complete and super secret contemporary art campaigns to plan. For these reasons, NAC has suspended most of our regular gallery hours for January and February. This allows us to concentrate on making our facility a premiere centre for the presentation and production of contemporary visual art and to develop some amazing exhibits and projects for the rest of the year.
Despite the fact we won’t be hosting an exhibit in our Show Room Gallery until March, many good things will be going on--great exhibits in the DTMG and wonderful music performances--all listed here so they won’t be missed. Also, this periodic missive with occasional pathetic allegories for existence from forgotten British comedians along with notices of our happenings will still make it your way through the miracles of modern telecommunication. Another one will be on its way in just a few days, but this is it for now. Happy New Year! Someone fix Knowlton Nash’s hair. Another decade’s about to roll through, encapsulated in a slickly edited one-hour review. It happens like that.
