1. Director’s Meandering Preamble

“Look around you…look how boring it is...look how bored we all are…Once and for all let’s kill the alienation myth, the existentialism myth, the angst myth.”
- Editorial in FILE Megazine (General Idea), 1977

We didn’t lay those myths low once and for all on Saturday night at NAC’s tenth annual STRUTT Wearable Art Show, but we had them down on the canvas and hearing the count. Congratulations to all the sponsors, artists, performers, runway constructors, servers, bartenders, and other volunteers who helped shake the concrete foundations of ennui in the Garden City! STRUTT has taken on a life of its own—like dutch elm disease, it’s now officially unstoppable. We’re stacking all the kudos from satisfied spectators like chord wood, a nice pile just in time for winter. If you’d like to cosy up to a computer monitor and relish a while in the afterglow, Brian Yungblut posted great photos of all the wearable art in Saturday’s show taken just before our volunteer models marched them down the runway.

You can find them here:

I’d also like to welcome new and returning members who signed up Saturday. Just think, you signed on for a whole year of insufferably glib, nearly comprehensible missives like this one! No one said supporting a charitably-operated Artist-run Centre was gong to be easy. Joining Saturday were Artist and Art Enthusiast members: Shelia Massey, Heather Ott, Lorie Callander, Christian Friis, Doug Ledingham, David Carmichael, Harald Ensslen, L.Boese, Michael Wilkins, Lesley, Wilkins, Ana Yuristy, Brittany Campbell, Maryl Fraser, Suzanne Jacques, Tina Jones, Matt Fancy, Winnie Mozzoni, Rob Nunn, Deborah Kehler, Stephanie Vail, and Dave Ditor.

NAC also welcomes Art Supporters: Tammy Ziegler, Bev and Doug MacDonald, Christine Cosby and Rob Elliott, Peter Partridge, Jon Adams and Jody Barnett, John Crawley and Gaby Piper-Crawley, Sherry Wilkinson and Joseph Marchant, Diane Chesla, and Tony Venditti.

Thanks to all our sponsors for making STRUTT 09 a rocking affair: RBC Dominion Securities - Frank Coy, StageVision, Danzka Vodka, Life is Good-Creekside Winery, Skyway Digital, Steamwhistle, The Office Tap & Grill, Wellington Court, The Spotted Calf, The Merchant Ale House, Drake Hotel, Megalomaniac, Coyote's Run, Henry of Pelham, The Standard, Eleven Hair Studio, Suitcase in Point Theatre Company, Access Multimedia, and Lousje & Bean. Couldn’t have done it without you!

Congratulations, welcome aboard, we’re at it again this weekend with an opening reception for Kyle Kostecki in the Dennis Tourbin Members Gallery at 7pm Saturday, followed immediately by The Niagara Indie Music Video Festival at 9pm. Then it’s go Roughriders!

4. Saturday Double Bill!

Kyle_SQPEAS & CARROTS
By NAC Member Kyle Kostecki
In the Dennis Tourbin Members Gallery
Opening at 7pm – sharp!

It is a show about getting nutritionally balanced meals three times a day. About proper food combining, including vegetables, whole grains, fruit and dairy products (although the latter not combined). Let me point out that peas and carrots are only optional. These can be substituted with any vegetable you fancy-turnips and squash for example. A 'tomato', which is in fact a fruit, can also be eaten in place. Below is a simple recipe that can become a staple for your winter dinners.

Easy Curried Squash Soup

(serves 3-4)
1 small onion, chopped
1 medium kabocha squash (or other winter squash or pumpkin), skinned, seeds removed and chopped (about 7 cups worth)
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon curry powder
1 L chicken stock, vegetable stock or water
salt and pepper to taste
4 tablespoons cream

Combine onion, squash, curry, salt, and liquid in a soup pot and bring to a simmer. Simmer until squash is tender, about 30-40 minutes. Remove from the burner and allow soup to cool so you can puree it.
