Call for Submissions

One evening last April, in the flash of a few hours, NAC members and supporters made plain the vitality of contemporary visual art in Niagara. A small horde of enthusiastic collectors took their pick from a litter of 150 works. Seventy-five of them were whisked out the door, mustering $10K for NAC and another $5K to line the pockets of Niagara artists. Small Feats established itself with the authority of a hefty chunk of Canadian Shield landing on a box of jelly-filled donuts. It was a smack down. We’re coming up to a year later and we’re game for crushing the puff pastry of Garden City ennui all over again.

NAC Members! We call on you for acts of brilliance concentrated in the confines of a single square foot. Lay something on us that’s sweet and condensed and radiates with unearthly power! NAC will pony up the materials–choose a stretched canvas or a piece of Masonite or have your photo or digital image professionally mounted. The limit of works is three per artist and only 150 of the best are getting hung on the wall. They all sell for $200 and the artist makes the choice of donating half or all of the proceeds to NAC. Let us know if you're in by Friday 24 February and we'll hook you up with your chosen materials the following week. The deadline to get your completed work to us is Tuesday 3 April. Small Feats erupts on Saturday 14 April, here at the fort. Brace yourself.

NAC Member Bartending Guide
Drink_sqNAC Member Bartending Guide

We’ve gotta handful of submissions already, but we’d like a good-sized, handsome compendium of drink and snack recipes before we publish this first--and likely only--NAC Bartending Guide just in time for Xmas booze-ups. The guide will be assembled and designed in the spirit of the Women’s Institute recipe books that litter used bookstores; you know the kind, spiral binding, recipes for muffins.

Each NAC member will be credited for their submitted recipe. The joy of this exercise is really in the naming of the drinks. Who wouldn't want to try Trotsky's Ice Pick or a Jurgen Gothe. Anecdotes about the origins of the drinks are not necessary but they sure are encouraged. We're also looking for some bar guide doodles to scatter throughout. We can't guaratnee any $ for the artists (there's absolutely nothing but glory for recipe contributors) but we promise to share whatever proceeds from sales of the book with contributing artists. How's that for a get poor quick scheme?

Arts & Literary Publication
ALIV Issue of NAC’s Legendary
Arts and Literary Publication

It’s time to squeeze grey areas into puddles of black ink. NAC is seeking submissions for the fourth issue of our Arts and Literary Publication. In the past, this collection of basically anything that can be reproduced in print was generated through an open call. Some fantastically eclectic collections were produced. We’re not knocking that, but we thought we’d mix it up for issue four. This time we’re asking members to respond to a theme. Here it is: Good Times Bad Times.

So kNACers, bring forth your prose, poetry, essays, drawings, found things, photographs, and anything that can be reproduced in print that explores, Good Times Bad Times.

Selector/Arrangers are Anthony Perri and Sean “Crankypants” Condon

The deadline for submissions is Thursday 1 October. We don’t have the scratch to pay contributors, but we’ll give you copies and distribute them to NAC members and other artist-run centres and galleries across the country.
